(30-08-23) MOGADISHU — On Wednesday, former Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed called for an immediate end to the nine-month conflict in Laascaanood, the capital of Sool region, describing it as “deeply regrettable.”
The war has resulted in numerous civilian casualties. “We extend our deepest sympathies to those who have lost loved ones and those injured,” Sheikh Sharif said in a statement.
Member of federal parliament, Sheikh Sharif urged warring parties Somaliland and SSC-Khatumo to cease hostilities and turn to dialogue. He reminded that previous calls for peace have gone unanswered, saying, “It’s time to allow displaced people to return home and resolve this through peaceful discourse.”
Sheikh Sharif’s most pointed message was aimed at the federal government: “They can’t stand by idly. They must foster peace and ensure no more lives are lost,” he concluded.
