(22-09-23) MOGADISHU — President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud announced Thursday that the government’s protracted war against Islamist extremist group Al-Shabaab is nearing its final stage, according to a speech made at a dinner attended by government officials, parliament members, and military officers in Dhusamareb.
In a grave message to anyone assisting the group, President Hassan asserted, “Al-Shabaab kills those who facilitate it, whether they are smugglers or individuals hiding money for tribal reasons.” He added that any support for Al-Shabaab worsens the group’s impact on society.
President Hassan also called on citizens to stay away from areas where Al-Shabaab is known to operate. He emphasised that the group has lost significant ground and resources, stating, “Al-Shabaab currently has no source of income, and anyone hiding or giving funds to the group will be held accountable.”
The President further delved into the financial mechanics that have supported the group’s activities. “Everything from the explosives used to the vehicles and water purchased—all these have been funded,” he said, questioning how anyone providing such resources could claim innocence in the group’s terrorist actions.
The President has been in the city of Dhusamareb for almost two months, focusing on leading the first phase of operations against Al-Shabaab. His remarks reflect growing confidence within the government that the militant group’s influence is waning and can be eradicated.
