(24-11-23) MOGADISHU – Following Somalia’s historic accession to the East African Community (EAC) on Friday, the Immigration & Naturalisation Directorate (IND) issued a statement promising enhanced free movement for Somali citizens within the EAC region. This commitment aligns with the principles of the EAC, aiming to foster deeper regional integration and cooperation.
The IND’s announcement comes on the heels of Somalia officially becoming the eighth member of the EAC, a move celebrated as a significant stride in Somalia’s regional and international relations. The Directorate emphasised the importance of this milestone in expanding opportunities for the Somali people, particularly in terms of accessing broader markets and facilitating easier travel within the East African region.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who played a central role in the nation’s bid for EAC membership, was commended by the IND for his efforts. The President, during the 23rd Round of the EAC Leaders’ Summit, highlighted the long-standing ambition since 2016 to join the community, viewing it as a gateway to a more prosperous future for Somalia.
The promise of free movement is seen as a key advantage of EAC membership, with the potential to boost trade, tourism, and cultural exchanges. It also aligns with the EAC’s objectives of enhancing socio-economic, political, and cultural integration among its member states.
