(02-01-24) GAROWE (Halqabsi News) — Abshir Omar Huruse, the former Federal Foreign Minister who recently resigned to run for the presidency of Puntland, has dismissed allegations of support from the federal government as unfounded. Mr Huruse clarified that his candidature is independent, emphasising his lack of affiliation with any political group or faction.
In his campaign for the upcoming Puntland Presidential Electons, Huruse outlined his vision of the region as a steadfast supporter of the federal government, underscoring the significance of collective responsibility and engagement with Puntland’s elders and societal groups on matters concerning the region’s relationship with the federal government.
On federalism and the ongoing constitutional review process, Huruse called for initiating changes at the grassroots level. “Puntland was not involved in the initial constitutional discussions but has consistently aimed to promote constitutional governance in conjunction with the formation of the federal government. The Federal Government, in turn, must acknowledge and give precedence to Puntland’s role,” he asserted in an interview.
Huruse identified Puntland’s pressing chance for sweeping reform. His political strategy is built on dialogue, genuine reconciliation, the fortification of governmental institutions, and the revamping of Puntland’s governance systems to extend comprehensive social and governmental services
“The discernible advancement in Puntland is a direct outcome of the people’s investments… I am devoted to cultivating social and security stability. Once this is realised, the people’s taxes and revenues should be safeguarded from corruption and cycled back into public services,” he noted, committing to the disclosure of his assets for the sake of transparency upon assuming office.
Among the over a dozen candidates for Puntland’s presidency, Huruse has pledged to steer Puntland towards the democratic governance its inhabitants desire, aiming to resolve the ongoing electoral discord if elected.
