(25-01-24) GAROWE (Halqabsi News) – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arrived in Garowe on Thursday to attend the inauguration of Puntland’s re-elected leader, President Said Abdullahi Deni, amidst a backdrop of political tension between the federal government and Puntland state.
The president was warmly received by President Deni, along with other officials, highlighting a moment of political significance in a nation grappling with federal and regional power dynamics. The ceremony, which saw attendance from various corners of the country and abroad, including former Prime Ministers, underscored its national importance.
Deni’s return to power, secured through an indirect election by Puntland lawmakers on January 8th, came after intense political strife and street clashes, spotlighting the deep-seated divisions in Somali politics. Given the ongoing discord between President Deni and President Mohamud, his re-election has raised concerns at Villa Somalia, the presidential palace.
The roots of the current tension trace back to the presidential elections in May 2022, where Deni’s bid for the national presidency was unsuccessful. Additionally, Puntland’s failure to secure the Somali Prime Minister post has further strained relations.
Beyond its ceremonial scope, the inauguration event offers an avenue for dialogue and potential reconciliation between the federal government and Puntland. It arrives at a critical juncture in Somalia’s journey towards political stability and effective governance.
