(09-03-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — Defence Minister Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur and Shane L. Dixon, the Chargé d’Affaires at the US Embassy in Somalia, met on Saturday at the embassy in Mogadishu. They discussed joint efforts against the Al-Shabaab insurgency, particularly aiming to enhance the National Security Architect and finalize the ATMIS exit strategy by December.
The Defence Ministry’s statement highlighted Minister Nur’s appreciation for the continuous US support in bolstering Somalia’s peace and security. In response, the US Embassy pledged further aid to Somalia, particularly in combating Al-Shabaab, recognising the urgency of the ongoing battle against terrorism.
Significantly, the United States has been instrumental in the anti-terrorism campaign in Somalia, providing strategic support such as airstrikes and bolstering the capabilities of the Somali National Army’s elite Danab forces. Last month, Somalia and the US signed a defence agreement to construct five military bases for the Danab forces, with an investment worth 100 million dollars. By the end of this year, Somali Forces are expected to assume security responsibilities from ATMIS.
