(18-03-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — The director general of the Somali Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA), Ahmed Moallim Hassan, hosted a meeting with a delegation from the Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority and Egypt Air in Mogadishu on Monday, signalling the beginning of new aviation ties between Somalia and Egypt.
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the initiation of direct flights from Aden Abdulle International Airport in Mogadishu to Cairo, as announced by Mr Hassan. The proposed air route, aimed at enhancing the connectivity between the two capitals, is currently under evaluation by both parties.
During their visit, the Egyptian delegation thoroughly reviewed the facilities at the SCAA headquarters and Aden Abdulle International Airport. This move comes after a similar exploration by Saudi Airlines, hinting at an expanding interest in Mogadishu as a pivotal aviation hub.
If the plan materialises, Egypt Air will become the ninth international carrier to serve Mogadishu, joining other airlines such as Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Ethiopian Airlines. This expansion reflects Somalia’s increasing integration into the global aviation network.
“The establishment of direct flights to the Middle East, and potentially to European destinations, is a key part of our strategy to enhance the international accessibility of our country,” said Mr Hassan. He added that this initiative is expected to foster economic development and elevate Somalia’s international stature.
