(14 April 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — Mohamed Abdi Hayir (Mareeye), the Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, apologised on Sunday to farmers and business people for severe delays at security checkpoints in Mogadishu that have led to significant losses of perishable goods.

The minister’s statement came in response to growing complaints from vegetable traders about extensive vehicle inspections, which have deteriorated their goods due to prolonged waits.

“I am telling the Somali farmers that the ministry is here to support you and boost your production,” Mareeye said. He acknowledged the challenges at the checkpoints and requested the army to streamline the inspection processes to prevent further losses. Farmers and traders have expressed frustration over the delays, which they claim compromise the freshness of their produce, crucial to their livelihood and the local economy.

While emphasising the need for security, Mareeye also urged patience with the military forces tasked with safeguarding Mogadishu against terrorist threats. “The army stands day and night to protect the security of the capital,” he stated, calling for a balance between security measures and the facilitation of business activities.
