On Sunday, outgoing Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG), Catriona Laing, made a farewell visit to Dhusamareb, the administrative capital of Galmudug. SRSG Laing was warmly welcomed by the Galmudug leadership, led by President Ahmed Abdi Kariye ‘Qoorqoor’. She engaged in discussions with President Qoorqoor and representatives from civil society groups, focusing on topics such as support for state and peacebuilding initiatives, progress concerning a local UN office, and recent strides in the region’s campaign against female genital mutilation (FGM).
During an event celebrating Galmudug’s recent anti-FGM legislation, Ms Laing remarked that FGM has been a focal issue in her tenure in Somalia. She expressed pride and honour in contributing to the state’s efforts, congratulating Galmudug on the enactment of the law.
