(01 Sep 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – In a move to strengthen national security and maritime control, the federal government of Somalia has issued new directives for vessels operating within its waters.
All ships entering or utilizing Somali waters are now required to prominently fly the Somali flag. This measure is part of a broader strategy to ensure compliance with the country’s laws and regulations.
Additionally, vessels traversing the Somali sea must notify Somali authorities in advance and adhere to procedures established by the Ministry of Ports and Maritime Transport.
The federal government views these directives as crucial to enhance monitoring and control over Somalia’s maritime territory, safeguarding it from illegal activities.
This development follows the recent signing of a 10-year maritime defence agreement with Turkey, further underscoring Somalia’s commitment to protecting its maritime security.
These initiatives come amidst Somalia’s efforts to nullify agreements that it deems to have violated its sovereignty, including Ethiopia’s access to Somali waters through Somaliland.
