(24 Sep 2024) GALKAYO (Halqabsi News) – The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Hassan Moallim Mohamud, has initiated a public consultation process in Galkayo to gather input on proposed amendments to key chapters of Somalia’s Provisional Constitution. The minister emphasized the importance of involving citizens from all regions in this critical review.
MP Burhan Aden Omar, chair of the Independent Commission for the Review and Implementation of the Constitution, stressed the urgency of finalizing the constitution for the country’s governance and development. Senator Syed Abdi Hussein, Secretary of the Constitutional Monitoring Committee, commended the local authorities for their support and encouraged citizens to share their views online.
Minister Moallim thanked participants for their contributions and reiterated the government’s commitment to nationwide similar consultations. He urged Somalis to shape their country’s future through this democratic process actively.
The revision of the provisional Constitution is focused on several key issues, including the status of the capital city of Somalia and the distribution of powers and revenues between the federal government and the federal member states. The current provisional federal Constitution was adopted in 2012, paving the way for the country’s stabilisation and recovery.
