(23 Oct 2024) HARGEISA (Halqabsi News) – The Somaliland police command has released a critical report detailing a significant rise in serious crime rates across the country in 2024. The report, submitted to President Muse Bihi Abdi, revealed that 28,418 criminal cases were recorded over the year.
The report sheds light on various alarming incidents, including a high number of violent offences such as murders, rapes, and car accidents. Police operations commander General Mohamed Adan Saqadhi, who presented the findings to the president, stated that while 4,842 cases were resolved and 10,840 settled, 860 remain under investigation, and 11,876 have been referred to the courts.
A particularly worrying trend was noted in the rise of violent crimes. The report recorded 68 homicides, with 62 suspects arrested in connection with these cases, though six suspects remain at large. Additionally, 321 rape cases were reported, involving 343 accused individuals, including 10 gang-related assaults. Of these, 270 suspects were arrested, while 73 are still on the run.
Road safety also remains a pressing concern, as 718 car accidents led to 188 deaths and 4,454 injuries. These accidents caused extensive damage, involving 3,525 vehicles and the loss of 528 animals.
In addition to violent crime, the report highlighted social challenges such as child abandonment. Twenty cases of abandoned children were recorded, with 12 of the children being placed in daycare centres.
The Somaliland police command has vowed to step up its efforts to address crime and improve public safety. However, the report underscores the scale of the challenge and the need for enhanced crime prevention measures and more effective law enforcement across the region.
